You really need to subscribe to the ‘Trading Football’ website to learn how to use many of these strategies. You can get a good taster of some of the strategies on YouTube. I would also recommend ‘Bet72’ and the ‘Market Matcher'(Betting System Notes) which identifies potential games for a number of the strategies along with the Homer strategy.
‘Goal Profits’ is another subscription site which helps with live trading of LTD and CS markets. There are a number of resources to support your learning and twitter feeds for live trading. Currently it costs £37 a month for the service and has access to a number of other useful services which have developed over the last few years.
Big Mike Marsland was the cornerstone of the ‘Strategic Betting’ service before he left after some ‘contractual difficulties.’ He has gone onto work for another website who provide a similar service. The Rednapp strategy is an interesting trading strategy but does require a bit of experience before you dive in. This is now a bit dated and odds have depreciated a little for the strategy. The Le Redknapp is the 2018 updated version. Mike has also produced a set of horse racing stategies which he used to provide bets for on the Strategic Betting subscription website. His main interest was horse racing and rugby and he developed a lot of strategic bets on these sports. The horse racing strategies can be found on the ‘free horse racing tools and strategies page.’
Yet another subscription service (expensive) which provides stats based tips and trades. A free month trial is available and there are 3 levels of service.

The Old Favoutite – What is laying the draw?
Laying the Draw or LTD is by far the most commonly used football trading strategy. Many experienced traders bemoan the fact that this strategy (originally popularised by John Duncan) is not as profitable as it once was (see article below) as the market margins have been squeezed. That may be the case (isn’t it always) but it is still a good place to start. Whilst the lay (bet against) is placed in the draw market, fundamentally, the strategy is backing (betting for) the favourite team to score first, this then pushes the draw price out to a point where it can then be backed to ensure a profit across all three outcomes.

A question now often asked is… “ Does Laying the draw in football trading still work?” . When people first set out trading football it is normally the first strategy they learn, however it doesn’t end up being as easy as it sounds. Well, It depends on what you mean by “work”?
As a strategy, or plan of action, it does work. You lay the draw and then back the draw at higher odds after a goal goes in. Pretty simple! It has worked like that for years and I expect will still work like that for years to come. So, YES, it still works and works just as well as it has for years.
So why do people say it doesn’t work?
A strategy is nothing more then a “plan of action” however some people don’t see a strategy as just being a plan but as some sort of “ guaranteed way of profiting ”. These are the same people that will probably tell you that the Lay The Draw strategy “doesn’t work” and also that all strategies don’t work and you can’t make money from this game etc. It really depends on your expectations when using the method. If you are expecting that laying the draw will allow you to profit on every football match you trade and is some sort of “loophole” then you will be seriously disappointed. If you see it as a way to profit on certain matches which you carefully select then it can be a great way of making profits. There are traders who make their living from “Laying The Draw,” that is one reason why I am reviewing the service of Betgreen. The fact is, they work hard at it. They will research every match they enter and ensure that the statistics are on their side with the trade. If you select your matches correctly and stick to your plan then you should do well with this type of method in the long term.
Where do people go wrong with LTD?
There are many ways to go wrong with using the LTD method. This includes poor match selection, poor liquidity, not having a clear plan when the underdog scores, staying in till the end because there “must be a goal”.
Do remember, that this is TRADING and the same trading principles apply. In my view, the reason most people go wrong with LTD is because they don’t “ let the winners run, and cut the losers short ”.
For example, most will lay the draw from the start and then lock in a profit immediately once the favourite scores. This normally provides a profit of 30-40% on your stake.
However, when you hit a 0-0 you can often be risking more then 100% of your stake since you are laying which gives a higher liability.
If you lay the draw @ 5 and exit @ 2 you are risking 150% of your stake.
So, if you immediately lock in a profit after the first goal then you are risking 150% to potentially win 40% which means you are effectively backing at odds of 1.30 which isn’t a favourable risk-reward ratio at all.
What you “should” be doing after the first goal goes to the favourite, is letting the position run for longer. You are now in a winning position and cutting out of a winning position should probably be the last thing you should be doing! You should let it run for longer and, if the favourite, can go 2-0 up then you can be locking in a profit of 80%+.
Then again, if the favourite is leading 2-0 why lock in a profit at all? Why not let it run till the end of the match and win 100%?
The main problem for newbies is that they “fear” losing and they fear that equaliser coming which will ruin their trade. When you are new to this game, you see a green screen and you want to take the profit as soon as possible. You fear the fact that you had the chance to take profit and might still end up with a loser when really you should be racing your profits as far as possible.
It can be annoying if the favourite leads 1-0 and the underdog brings it back to 1-1 and you end up with a losing trade but this is trading and its not meant to be easy!
Lay The Draw USED to work better though, didnt it?
Some will suggest that Lay The Draw actually used to work a lot better then it does now.
Apparently, you were able to lock in profits in excess of 60% after the first goal was scored by the favourite and in recent years the markets have adjusted since “everyone” is using this method.
Ii can’t be confirmed or denied, however a number of traders who have been on Betfair a very long time feel the draw price has been behaving relatively the same for a very long time too. It’s probably down to the odds not jumping as high after the first goal as some would have you believe.
So, perhaps the Draw odds used to jump higher after the first goal when Betfair was brand new and the markets hadn’t yet matured but the markets have been how they have been for a very long time now and it is proven that they are pretty efficient when it comes to prices these days.
The only way to beat the market is to pick your opportunities.
The “Lay The Draw” strategy is a bit like Marmite amongst Football traders. You either love it or hate it but it does still work!
If you are expecting a method that will allow you to profit on every single football match with no possible losers then you are going to be disappointed, but if you are willing to research all your matches and stick to your original plan then it can still be a great way to bring in a trading income.
To conclude, Lay the draw still works but its not the holy grail! (If such a thing exists).
How Team News Can Impact Betfair Markets.
Knowing the key players in the top teams can definitely help you to profit from market movements once teams are announced.
You do not have to be an anorak to know that Man Utd are always going to be stronger and more fancied with Wayne Rooney in their side then without.
So last week when the Man Utd team Vs Newcastle was announced and Rooney was, surprisingly, announced as starting after his long injury lay off then there was obviously only one direction the markets were going to go.
Before the teams were announced, Man Utd were priced @ 1.63 but after the inclusion of Rooney they were slowly backed in over the following hour and started @ 1.45 . This is low risk, high reward trading since the price is never going to go the other way in these instances and if you are “on the ball” you can catch opportunities like this very often.
You are probably many people reading this and wondering how you can find out the teams as soon as they are announced. Well most clubs usually announce the teams on the club website however these days this task is being made even easier by…
The teams are usually announced 1 hour before kick off so if you type the teams name in the Twitter search engine then you can just keep refreshing till you see a source announce the team. In this case, you would just type “Man Utd” into the twitter search engine and see what comes up. If the team has not been announced just give it another 5 minutes and keep trying till someone tweets the team.
When trading this one myself, I was slow to react and I missed the initial steam. By the time I looked at the markets, Man Utd had already steamed from 1.61 into 1.54. However, it was still only 7pm so that allows for another 45 minutes for other punters to catch onto the news and put their money.
As mentioned, when you have such positive team news as this there really is only one way the markets will go and you should not be afraid that the price has already moved too much already or that it will suddenly move the other way since the majority of the time it wont!
Below you can clearly see where the market was at the time of the teams being announced and how it moved pretty slowly down to 1.45 at kick off.

Where else can you back the 2nd best team in the Premiership last season at odds of 26/1 against a newly promoted side?
Where else can you lay said newly promoted side at odds of 1.37 (remember that as layers we want to lay at as short a price as possible).It all came in the Southampton v Manchester United at the beginning of this season (2018/13). This match was a superb and very profitable example.
Here’s a screenshot of this match where It was possible to consider laying Southampton at odds of 1.37.
The screenshot was taken in the 83rd minute of the match. It was 2-1 to Southampton at this stage. Delay the entry to as late as possible and the 83rd minute is as late as possible for most. It provides 7 minutes (+Fergie Time) in which to hope that Manchester United pull of their trademark great escape. Cue Van Persie!
And that is the perfect D-R-T, or how to back Manchester United at 26.0 ( in fact the Racing Post reported that Manchester United were backable at odds of 75 on Betfair – the first screenshot was in the 83rd minute, Van Parsley did not score until the 87th minute so this was conceivable).
In the 87th minute, the draw was available to lay at extremely short odds too. Remember to delay entry until as late as humanly possible – the later you delay, the bigger the prices.
So watch out for these Delay-React-Trade matches. This is a favourite tennis trading strategy and can also be applied to some horse races.
When trading football matches you can be a layer rather than a backer, opposing small prices for low risk liabilities.
This style of trading is good for those of us who like to keep liabilities relatively low, each trader has their own preference of course and what may suit one trader may not suit another.
A favorite type of trade for this revolves around the over and under goals markets. Look for games that are likely to have goals rather than ones that are looking short of goal activity; this again is down to individual choice and research.
If you identify a game you think will be a goal fest, don’t back over 4.5, 5.5 goals but rather lay Under 4.5, 5.5 as this is going against the masses.
Southampton take on Fulham in the early afternoon kick off at St Mary’s.
This is a game that is identified as one that should have some goals in it, both sides score and concede goals.
Southampton averages at home are: Score 2, Concede 2.
Fulham averages away from home are: Score 1.33, Concede 2.33.
The market indicators predict the number of goals in this game will be 2.9.
Therefore the trade is as follows:
Lay Under 4.5 goals for 50 points @ 1.22.
Exit points are down to individuals as it boils down to your risk tolerance levels.
Early goals are the key and if they start to flow then this could a big pay day.
You can be right and still lose.
Just about sums my day up yesterday, I did say that there would be goals in the Southampton v Fulham game and there were 4 of them.
The early goal for Southampton got the old juices flowing as it looked as though I was onto a nice winning trade, all we needed was another goal before half time and I would have been out like a rat up a drain pipe.
Unfortunately the 2nd goal didn’t arrive and I had to take a loss.
Of course the goals did eventually come but it was too late for me.
So onto the evening and we had El Clasico to look forward to and here was a game where the goals were sure to flow, queue a lay of over 6.5 and over 4.5 goals.
23 minutes gone… GOAL Real….. 31 minutes gone GOAL Barca… this is looking good, no need to exit yet as the goals are a flowing…. 61 minutes gone GOAL Barca….. 66 minutes GOAL Real, now at this point I should have been out as both positions were a nice shade of green, but surely there will be a winner here…… yes there was but it wasn’t me.
Trading Across Multiple Football Markets.
This is really simple and really straight-forward. It won’t work on A LOT of games off the bat but it can work if you hold out in the first 10 minutes of a match. There will be instances where you can set up this whole trade in one swoop which is where it can become pretty lucrative.
Which Football Markets do we use?
We are going to be looking at two markets for this method:
Over/Under 0.5 Goals Market Correct Score Market.
We are then going to be trading across these two markets as it seems to be easier Green Up across the two markets than it does when it is just across the one market.
The Football Trading System.
All you need to do is follow through with this football trading system. بسيط! So here goes:
1. Go to the Correct Score market and put a £10 stake on 0-0 and note down the odds. You would be looking at odds of between 11 and 16 generally speaking. I wouldn’t go any lower than this.
2. Now go to the Over/Under 0.5 Goals and look at the lay odds of Under 0.5 Goals. Now if they are lower than the 0-0 Correct Score odds then lay straight away.
3. IF THEY ARE NOT: Then enter your own odds. You want to enter 1.0 lower than the odds you used on the correct score market. You can either put a £10 lay bet on this or you can use a trading calculator to spread your profit across all outcomes.
With a £10 stake on both bets, you would profit £10 if the score was 0-0 and you would break even if any goals were scored.

12. Trading evenly matched teams.

1. BTTS Yes is under 1.75.

Leaders go 2-0 up – a) Do nothing especially if early in the game (b) Lock in an equal loss (c) Back the leaders with the same stake to leave break even on the draw/losing team (d) Lay the leaders again and reduce loss if it goes 2-1 or wait for a profit if it goes 2-2!
0-1/1-0 – Look at stats and decide!
Post Green – Recycle the trade/Back either team/Lay the draw late in the game – Only use on matches you are watching and feel there will be goals based on your research.
Positives; A good risk/reward ratio and a high strike rate is not necessary.
The bore draw means no entry so is taken out of the trade.
Opportunity to recycle the green screen for bigger profit risk free.

Hi I’m pretty new to this trading etc and just getting a feel for it. I’m looking at a strategy to start with that will suit me and the laying the draw looks like a good starting point. Have you ever seen laying like below and if it could work?
Lay all 3 outcomes of a football match by :-
Laying both teams in the Match Odds market of Betfair.
Then after the kick off, and some time has passed, whilst there is no score, Lay the Draw as the Draw odds decrease.
Alternatively, if one team is winning, you could :-
Lay the losing team and the Draw.
Then after some time has passed and the odds of the winning team have decreased.
Lay the winning team for a small profit.

I am saying about the trading strategy with placing a 10 pounds on 0-0 and then put a lay order on under0.5. i don t understand why i would break even if a goal is scored.

So much depends on your preferred trading/betting style, staking plan and using a number of strategies as part of a portfolio. I would recommend you take a trial of ‘Goal Profits’ which has a range of strategies and sensible advice. There is no quick way to be successful at trading and it takes time and practice to find things that work for you. I prefer inplay trading where I can find value by laying low or backing high to limit liability.

Thanks Lisa – This page was from 2018 so I needed to refresh my memory – have contacted Mihai by email now.
As you know, it’s all about finding strategies/ideas which suit your style of betting and risk/reward ratio and then adjusting these to your own research. I still use the ‘Flashscores’ site for general research and uk. soccerway Also oddspredictor/ plus some others depending on what I’m looking for – you tend to get used to some and stick with them while some strategy publishers suggest others…all comes down to which ones you prefer, although there are always new ones coming out which you can miss if you get over comfortable with your usual ones!
A good strategy that I’m following is to back the under 2.5 goals and trade out in the 9th minute if 0-0. I usually make between 5%-10% profit. If there is an early goal I take up 1-2, 2-1, 2-2 and either the 0-3 or 3-0 making sure that my liabilities are covered in the U2.5 goals market. What is football trading?

The 90 minute stock market.
From a trading point of view, football is nothing more than a 90 minute stock market.
Let’s say that Dave is a financial trader looking to buy shares in Coca-Cola.
He checks the financial history of the company, strength of the competition, current market conditions and so on.
Based on all the data he can find, Dave makes an informed judgement about future profit and growth potential.

It may be that Dave expects Manchester City to score the first goal of the game during the first half.
He then has a number of markets he can choose to trade in; match odds, next goal, half-time score and many more.

It’s as if a stock market has been condensed into a very small amount of time.
How do Betfair prices work?
There are many factors which influence Betfair market prices, but they are roughly priced according to probability.
The easiest way to understand this is to imagine that the exact same fixture is played 100 times.
For example, if the Manchester derby were to be played 100 times over, there would be home wins, draws and away wins.
To keep things simple, we'll assume that the results worked out very neatly into 50 home wins, 20 draws and 30 away wins.
In probability terms, we'd have 50%, 20% and 30% - as long as future games were played under the same conditions.
Are you following so far? Good!
A 50% probability implies that half of the games played in the future will also end in a home win, therefore it would priced at 2.00. If you backed it for £100, you would either win £100 or lose £100 - 50-50 chance - 50%.
The away win only has 30% probability, so that would be priced at 3.35 and the draw at 20% would be priced at 5.00. In other words, one in five matches would be expected to end in a draw.

Why do Betfair prices move?
Price movement is essential in order to make a profit.
There are a number of reasons why Betfair prices move, these are the main ones:

Goals change games and they affect prices too. Going back to the Manchester derby example, we had a home win probability of 50% and a price of 2.00. If the home team go 1-0 up, the probability of them winning the game will certainly rise from 50%, perhaps to 75%.
75% probability converts to a price of 1.33 which is quite a drop! In fact, if you use our hedging calculator to look at this scenario you will see that from a £100 back of the home win at 2.00 you will now be able to lock in £50.38 profit (before commission) no matter what the final result. That's a great example of the power of football trading!
Red cards also affect prices, often causing markets to overreact. Many fans think that a team with 10 men will automatically go on to lose by a large number of goals, but traders know very differently.

How to start trading football.
The first thing you must understand is that you will not start trading and immediately pull money out of Betfair like it's an ATM. That just doesn't happen in the real world, though the many scammers in this industry will try to tell you differently, of course!

There will be days when nothing quite fits and in this situation, a successful trader does not trade.
Yes, many of the dropped trades would have been winners but that makes no difference whatsoever. A weak trade is still a weak trade whether it would have made a profit or not, so stay out. Be smart.
Win or lose, it doesn’t matter; you made a good decision.
You don’t kick yourself, you don’t get mad, you applaud your discipline knowing that long-term it will see you right.
Setting a trading plan.
Before you start trading, go through the fixtures for the day and build a shortlist of matches which you are interested in.
These are the ones which need additional research until you are left with a small number of the strongest opportunities you can find.​
Once you have your plan for the day, that's it set in stone. What you must avoid at all costs is hitting a few losses, running out of matches to trade on your plan and then looking for more to get involved with. We've all chased losses and it nearly always ends in tears. لا تفعل ذلك!
Instead, take it on the chin, learn what you can in order to improve and come back tomorrow with a fresh mind. You will learn a lot from losses and they will always happen, so accept them.
Once you are more experienced you may wish to get involved with a small number of in-play trades, but in-play is an incredibly easy way to lose money so be careful!

Being patient.
This doesn’t just mean waiting for strong trading opportunities; once you have found a strong trade and conditions are right, you may decide to wait before opening your position.

It may be 2.80 to lay the draw at kick-off, but after 20′ you could well be able to lay at 2.00.
Even at small £10 stakes your liability will fall from £18 laying at kick-off down to £10.
But that’s not all; you will be able to look at the in-play stats before entering your trade and if there have not been many shots or corners, you may decide to leave the trade alone and save yourself from a potential loss.
Even better, once a goal is scored the price will rise a lot further from 2.00 than it will from 2.80 and that means a lot more profit.
Of course, it can’t all be good news.
In this case, you will be reducing the time window you have to find a goal by almost half. You may also find that you miss out on a number of planned trades when early goals go in, but that’s ok; nothing lost.

One logical approach in this situation would be to lay enough profit so that anything but a City win is scratch, leaving a bit more profit should they hold out - as expected.
If there's an equaliser with the last kick of the game you're going to be a little disappointed, but you had a free bet on City doing what they usually do against a team who will not get that goal on most occasions. Most of the time you'll have had a profit, it just happens that you didn't this time.
